¿Why we don´t go to Janitzio?
Unfortunatelly Janitzio Island, the best known in the world for this celebration, has become too crowded and commercialized. In broad daylight, the island has one of the most beautiful landscapes you can admire in México. But the spirit of modern times has turned the island into a big market for the Night of the Dead, and multituds wont let you see anything of the purpose of your visit. Such purpose is to know a very mystical festivity based on the religious idea than the dead come back from the beyond and share with living a moment of encounter, a family moment, full of symbols and meanings, an astonishing experience of love and it is a true privilege being a witness of this cultural expression in a world that changes values dramatically . In Janiztio the cementery has become everything but a quiet place. Too much show.
Pacanda´s been inhabitated even before Janitzio. We´ll take you there, where the celebration still continues alive and almost unknown and surpresily, even more spectacular. We have agreed with the islanders touristical measurings in order to maintein protected and alive this tradition. This will be our eighth year going there... and we go after the nineth. We´ll visit first Cuanajo, one the most reknown purépecha towns for wooden furniture. This time their wonders of wood wont be our objective, but their alive tradition of Noche de Muertos inside the houses. We´ll be allowed to enter into some homes and practice with them the welcoming of dead to their family altar. We invite you to be a witness and accomplice of simplicity, but at the same time greatness, of this belief ... Next we go toTzurumútaro (“place of thorns”). If Cuanajo shows the domestic side of Noche de Muertos, Tzurumútaro will show the cementery side and we´ll fulfill part of our mission. Time spent in this town´s cementery will show you the local taste of this celebration in the graveyard, and will witness the mixture of traditions And finally we´ll take you to the island and arrive around 2 am to its cementery, --twice bigger than Janitzio´s, right in the crest moment of a deep popular feeling...
